It was reviewed in the Tuesday, October 31, 2000 edition of the Eastern Evening News

"Norwich UEA, October 30th 2000

Some bands sound great on record, but struggle to reproduce their songs live. Others don't really begin to excel until they stride out on stage to stand in front of an expectant crowd. Mansun proved that they rest firmly in the latter category at the UEA last night, thrilling their fans with a passionate performance.

This was Mansun's seventh visit to Norwich, and certainly the best of the three that I've attended. On stage banter was kept to a minimum as there was little more than a nanosecond between most songs, providing a real 'concept concert' feel to the evening. Lead singer Paul Draper (interesting fact - he grew up on the same Liverpool street as Lennon) gave a soaring vocal performance of both power and grace, and he was more than ably assisted by guitar virtuoso Dominic Chad and the rest of the band.

Their anthemic songs were brilliantly reproduced to leave the audience enveloped by an epic soundscape. The set list was nigh on perfect as it took the prime cuts from their three albums to date, although the biggest roars of the evening were saved for the trio of old favourites that came ahead of the encore, namely 'Wide Open Space', 'She Makes My Nose Bleed' and 'Taxloss'. 'Taxloss' in particular was stunning, as it stop-started to great effect causing the front rows of the audience to mosh wildly. As the lights went up the consensus view around me was that we had just seen a band at the peak of their powers - don't miss them if they return.
A longer review appeared in the Wednesday, November 8, 2000 edition of the Melody Maker

"THE ESSENTIAL 'KIX'

UEA, NORWICH
4/5

TODAY will go down in history. Floods, tornadoes, landslides, gales, happy ducks and Mansun. OK, so the nation's cafes aren't bubbling over with talk of Paul Draper's voice or Chad's latest choice of attire (a sort of Victorian jacket with cuffs starched so sharp, you'd tell children off for running with them), but one day they might be. You see, things like this don't happen very often - not the storms, but bands like Mansun.

Three albums into their career and they're still changing their sound, wilfully defying convention. They've been happily picking up and dropping off sets of fans with each new release like some laid-back, musical hitchhiking tour, confused by the mauling they've received from both the press and die-hard followers alike. It seems they can't win - they're not encouraged to develop but they'd be derided for staying the same.

Undeterred, they respond with glorious anthems like "I Can Only Disappoint U", shimmering tonight with mournful brilliance. Mansun are a rare, old-fashioned entity - a band who are developing. Maybe, 13 Top 20 singles down the road, Mansun are still a long way from where they're going. Maybe they don't even know where they're going. But what's so wrong with that?

If you lock out the prejudices, the petty gripes about Eighties guitars, the ridiculous way they're judged by the nature of their fans (who are becoming an increasingly hard-to-define sector), then what matters is that Mansun are different. Christ, I even spotted some charisma onstage as Paul leaned over the audience, goading the front rows, forcing them to work as hard as even him for The Jame/Duran Duran hybrid of "Being A Girl". There's also a new swagger and confidence on display during "Comes As No Surprise" and "Love Is..." - songs that are more laid-back, but delivered with real conviction. How long have we been crying out for a band with personality and intelligence when they were here all along?

"Electric Man" allays my fears that Mansun are turning into an indie Lighthouse Family, while "Wide Open Space" amazes me with its unfading emotion. And who said there was no such thing as a decent guitar solo anymore? Chad's virtuoso offerings tonight provide more than enough air-guitar fodder for indie-kids everywhere to develop repetitive strain injury of the right wrist. Wank-tastic.

"Taxloss", meanwhile, sounds unlike anything they've put to record. It slithers breathlessly from steriod-rock to David Lynch soundtrack and provides the perfect setting for an encore of new and old - the magnificent duo of "Fool" and "Legacy". Finally, "Everyone Must Win" places the band in a truly exciting expanse of punky experimentation. They can go anywhere from here.

But will anyone care when they're gone? Will Mansun leave their own legacy? You know, in the crazy topsy-turvy world where ducks can lord it over us all, who can say?

ANDREW SHEERIN

Paul Draper's verdict: "Yeah, it was good. We haven't played in Norwich for something like three years. It was quite weird really because we put the tour on at the very last minute - we were originally going to tour in January. But when 'I Can Only Disappoint U' went in the Top 10 we were all quite surprised so everyone was like, 'Put a tour on!' The thing about being in Mansun is we have a totally different, new audience with every album. And what we're trying to do is always produce something new. I got the impression that, out of that audience tonight, hardly anyone had seen us before and I think that's a good thing."

NORTHGATE ARENA, CHESTER

"GUESS who just got back today/The wild-eyed boys that have been away."

The noble words of Phil Lynott booming out the PA signify that, yes, "The Boys Are Back In Town". Tonight, Mansun are indeed a Chester draw, returning in triumph to the town that spurned them and, in doing so, helped spawn them. Nary a gig opportunity nor a favourable word in the local paper ever came their way round these parts. So how sweet must Mansun's return from conquering distant shores be tonight? The gig even coincides with sing Paul Draper's dad's 60th birthday and, within an hour, the local boy made (up) good will be dancing furiously with his pa to the likes of Abba's "Dancing Queen". This, lest we forget, is why loving Mansun comes so easily: their ceaseless ability to wade into the stagnant waters of Eighties pop's crap past and return clutching the Holy Grail of reinvented and credible Nineties masterline.

Such a long overdue homecoming was sure to be a little odd, but tonight's gig travels further towards Surrealsville courtesy of a) the closure of the bar, b) the fact only Boyzone and The Damned (kindred spirits, obviously) have played here before, c) the house lights remaining on throughout and d) the dawning realisation that a sizeable amount of the audience have come here hobbling on crutches. Oh and e) the fact that for much of tonight the golden Mansun - authors of one of the finest albums of the year - sound like The Cult. Or rather, The Cult crossed with Balaam & The Angel. In their gothy softmetal period. ARRRGH!!!!!

Possibly because of some bizarre form of revenge on Chester or, more likely, because he has gone completely and utterly bonkers, Mansun's previously blemish-free guitarist Chad has gone all Simple Minds on us. His distressingly sincere, epic workouts are pumped through an amp which appears to have been turned up way past 11, forcing the rest of the band to struggle to compete, sending the drummer's timing totally walkabout and rendering Paul's luxuriant voice about as intelligible as the cry of a hedgehog being squished by a juggernaut. Accordingly, previous prestine songs like "Taxloss" and "Wide Open Space" are rendered as enjoyable as having your ears scrubbed by wire wool while being forced to watch a video of "20 Goth Metal Greats". What is going on?

Mansun have played much, much better gigs, probably several hundred of them. So, the only explanation for tonight's disastrous show must be that the enormity of the occasion has conspired to nobble them entirely. Unless, of course, it's all a cruel ploy and Paul Draper's most malicious joke to date.

Chester jesters? Possibly.
ATTACK OF THE GREY MATTER

Edited by Ted Kessler

Mansun
London Kilburn National

FOUR SILHOUETTES stand perfectly still, statuesque, shrouded in red and blue light and strange, unearthly clouds of smoke. We can just make out a skull and crossbones on the guitar amp and several 'devil horns' salutes from the crowd, as the sweeping regal pomp of their orchestral intro music fills the auditorium. Then suddenly the group explodes into life, the guitarist standing legs akimbo, his guitar held above his head in a salute to the gods of rock, as the bloke with the shaggy blond hair and make-up shows out to the kids, surely ready to rest his leather-clad boot on the monitors at any moment.

No, it's not the first date of Tygers Of Pan Tang's comeback tour. This is Mansun. No, not as in Marilyn Manson before their mums let them get their knobs pierced. This is Mansun. With a 'u'. Confused? You're supposed to be. See, you can't help suspecting that Mansun take a pleasure and no little pride in implicitly demanding to be analysed, rationalised and (mis)understood, and then deliberately perplexing anyone who tries.

Once upon a simpler age, say ten years ago, Mansun would probably have merely been a slightly glammy, gothy rock band with a small cult following. But in the culturally incestuous '90s, they shine out because they're the most inspired rock dilettantes around.

Some time last year they had the originality of thought to decide there was more to life than being the next Oasis. Now, if they're aiming to be the ultimate '90s rock band, then most of the elements appear in place tonight.

You have to admire the way they've assimilated so many chunks of the Zeitgeist and not ended up looking like the most appalling chancers in rock history: the 'instant ambition and credibility - just add orchestra' ethos beloved of everyone from Menswear to Madonna; the 'instant androgyny - just add nail varnish' ethos beloved of sixth-form boys; the self-conscious smattering of irony (see titles like 'The Chad Who Loved Me', and 'Mansun's Only Love Song'); the snarling rent-a-snot northern arrogance, de rigueur since Oasis; the mystique of the image changes; the ambiguous lyrics; the ability to 'rock' convincingly and still play at pop with requisite class; the boyishly pretty guitarist; the tabloid shock radicalism - from the band's name to 'Stripper Vicar' to showering commuters with £25,000 for a video stunt; the campy pretentiousness; the musical eclecticism. What more could one ask for?

Well, perhaps a little humanity. A little more genuine feeling to cling to. Because you fear that once you scrape away all Mansun's skilfully constructed layers of art and artifice, that there's no heart.

Mansun play a top-hole rock show tonight, and there's no reason to doubt your instincts when the stab you in the rump with struttingly aggressive versions of 'Stripper Vicar' and 'Taxloss' or when the likes of 'Naked Twister' and '...Love Song' almost sound anthemic. You also notice how the stadium rock cliches mentioned in the opening paragraph seem beyond cliche with Mansun performing them. But there's something that still leaves you cold. Maybe it's because you suspect they're just pressing the right buttons, manipulating your response without really wanting to give anything of themselves to you.

Then again, you believe Paul Draper means it when he snarls and spits into the microphone but there's still a feeling that it's punkish ranting and raving about nothing very significant; it's rage against the washing machine. Meanwhile, he's only being about half as clever and profound as he'd like to think he is with his lyrics, and whenever emotions come into play, it's theatrical, hammed-up emotion, at pains not to expose itself too much.

There's no communication with the crowd, and obviously no encore (keep up grandad - this is the '90s!). Because they would never be so stupid as to give us what we want when we ask for it.

Of course, maybe we're being even more cynical than Mansun could ever be. Maybe they aren't half as calculating about all this as we think. They'll probably respond to this by saying, 'Just listen, don't analyse'. But they are a band whose music demands to be analysed, because it's aimed at the brain primarily. They hit your gut as well, but that's secondary, and the heart, it seems, you can leave for your dimbo pop groups. See, despite being one of Britain's most original, inventive and impressive bands, Mansun are falling in love with their own nascent creative genius. And if they don't watch it, their biggest strength will become a fatal flaw.
